Mighty Car Mods Take On Quad Lock Hot Laps

The latest episode of Quad Lock Hot Laps just dropped, and this one's for every Aussie who grew up watching two blokes wrench on cars in a Sydney driveway. Marty and Moog, the duo behind Mighty Car Mods, Australia's biggest automotive YouTube channel, sat down for our YouTube interview series.

What Is Quad Lock Hot Laps?

Quad Lock Hot Laps is our motorsport and car culture interview series where drivers, builders, and creators go beyond the podium and beyond the garage. The questions are hot, the answers are unscripted, and the pressure's on because every guest is answering while driving a hot lap on the sim.

Past guests include F1 driver Oscar Piastri and NASCAR's Shane van Gisbergen, both of whom left their mark on the leaderboard. In this episode, we put Mighty Car Mods to the test against the leaderboard and see how they stack up.

The Guests: Marty & Moog, Mighty Car Mods

If you've spent any time in Australian car culture, you know Marty and Moog. Since 2007, the pair have built Mighty Car Mods from a driveway project into the country's most-watched DIY automotive show, known for turbo builds, budget car battles, and genuinely useful modification content that's earned them hundreds of millions of views. Naturally, when they're in the Hot Laps seat, the conversation goes straight to the deep end of car culture: turbos, terrible car opinions, and the builds that made them famous.

Ranking Their Top 3 MCM Builds

Marty and Moog looked back over nearly two decades of builds and ranked their all-time favourites:

  1. The Subaru wagon, a big engine swap paired with a turbo. Sleeper wagon energy at its finest.
  2. Any Camry with a turbo, proof that MCM will find horsepower in the most unassuming shell.
  3. The Daihatsu Mira, their ongoing build, still very much a work in progress.
Most Expensive Mistake

Years ago, Mighty Car Mods were tossing between getting a Datsun 240Z or a Nissan R34 GT-R for $80,000. They had passed on the Nissan R34 priced at $80,000 as it seemed too expensive at the time. Fast forward to today, Nissan R34 GT-Rs are trading for anywhere between $250,000 and $500,000.

MCM's Music: More Than Just a Soundtrack

Car builds aside, music runs deep in the Mighty Car Mods story. Moog's background as a composer and producer has shaped the sound of the show since day one. It's a side of MCM that doesn't get talked about enough.

The Leaderboard Results

Banter aside, the lap times are what count. After their runs at the wheel, the Quad Lock Hot Laps leaderboard now sits with Shane van Gisbergen still on top at 1:45.091, just ahead of Oscar Piastri by three hundredths of a second.

Marty posted a 1:52.995, good enough for 9th place, while Moog (Blair) came home in 10th with a 1:55.854.

Marty and Moog bring the same energy to Quad Lock Hot Laps that's made Mighty Car Mods a staple of Aussie car culture for nearly two decades: equal parts knowledge, banter, and unfiltered opinion.
